During drilling, surface equipment transmits power to the bottom-hole drill bit through the drill pipe, driving the bit to break rock. Simultaneously, drilling fluid is pumped into the bottom of the well through the interior of the drill pipe, carries cuttings, and returns to the surface through the annulus between the drill pipe and the wellbore, thereby cleaning the wellbore and cooling the bit.  
 
Drill pipes are widely used in various oil drilling scenarios, including complex well types such as directional and horizontal wells. A single drill pipe is commonly referred to as a ""single joint,"" and its length is designed based on drilling requirements to ensure the overall stability and operational efficiency of the drill string.
 
 
II. Core Characteristic of Drill Pipes: Why High Strength is Essential?  
Drilling operations have extremely high performance requirements for drill pipes. Firstly, drill pipes need to support their own weight, as well as the total mass of the thousands of meters of drill string and bottom-hole assembly below them. Secondly, during drilling, drill pipes continuously withstand dynamic loads such as bending and rotation, while coping with complex underground pressure environments. Therefore, ""high strength"" is a core characteristic of drill pipes.  
 
To meet this demand, drill pipes are typically made of high-grade steel and further enhanced in strength and wear resistance through processes like surface hardening. Hence, after drilling is completed, drill pipes are tripped out and recycled for reuse in subsequent drilling operations. 1. Kelly  
Located at the uppermost end of the drill string, it is directly connected to the surface rotary table. Its main role is to transmit torque and bear the weight of the entire drill string, serving as the ""first station"" for transferring surface power downhole.  
 
2. Drill Pipe (Conventional Drill Pipe)  
It is the basic component of the drill string, with the largest quantity. Its main functions are to transmit torque, convey drilling fluid, and connect various parts of the drill string to ensure stable transmission of power and fluid.  
 
3. Heavy Weight Drill Pipe (HWDP)  
Used to increase the weight of the drill string, it avoids stress concentration caused by cross-sectional changes in the drill string assembly, thereby reducing the risk of fatigue failure and ensuring the safety of the drill string under complex working conditions.
 
 
IV. Specifications and Steel Grades of Drill Pipes: Standardization and Performance Assurance  
The specifications and performance of drill pipes must follow unified standards to ensure compatibility between different equipment and operational safety. Currently, the industry generally adopts relevant regulations of the American Petroleum Institute (API):  
 
1. Length Classification  
Divided into three categories by length, corresponding to the needs of different drilling scenarios, ensuring that the drill string can adapt to different well depths and operating conditions after splicing.  
 
2. Steel Grade  
Steel grade is a core indicator for measuring the strength of drill pipe steel, determined by the yield strength of the steel. API classifies drill pipe steel grades into five levels. The higher the steel grade, the greater the yield strength of the steel, and the stronger the overall strength (such as tensile and torsional strength) of the drill pipe, enabling it to adapt to more complex and harsh drilling environments.
